Here is my Lap Steel Guitar made from Oak and White Ash.  I did the double for myself and the single for my grandson.

Hi Drew.  They are both made from oak and white ash.  I used oak on the top piece because of the stress that the strings might put on it.  They actually have good sound.  My grandson plays both acoustic and standard electric guitar but when he saw and tried my double head Lap Steel he wanted to learn how to play one.  Hence, I built him the single and he's having fun with it.  I have a standard electric and a 4 string base guitar but I have never played a steel guitar so it should be some fun learning.  The lap steel costs very little and is easy to make.  It would be a nice project for you.
